Let The Battle Begin!
Thanks again to New York's Newsday for tipping their hat to this weekend's BBQ Battle out in Sayville, NY. The contest, now up to 45 teams, will feature an amazing NINE categories over two days...from pizza and hot dogs to pulled pork and sliced brisket. If smoke from a barbecue pit gets you all fired up, then you'll want to be on hand Friday through Sunday for the Sayville Fall Festival, an all-weekend event. Friday night will feature a chili cook-off (free and open to the public) and Saturday, a grilling and kids' event.
On Sunday, the big Battle of the BBQ Brethren (a New York State BBQ championship sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society) will take place. Among expected competitors are Will Breakstone of the now-closed Willie B's BBQ in Bay Shore, and brothers John and Clint Cantwell of the former Taste in Garden City. There also will be chocolate and cheese competitions as well as live music, barbecue demonstrations and lectures.
Although members of the public will not be allowed to taste the 'cue being judged, they can buy slow-smoked specialties from booths set up by local restaurants.
