Spam and S'mores
You know it's truly Summer when the whole world starts clamoring for Spamsicles, aka the deep fried Spam on a stick we created here.
As mentioned the other day, we were honored to have our salty, Panko crusted concoction end up on WomansDay.com late last week and came to discover shortly there after that the Spamsicle has actually been making quite the rounds lately -- from such favorites as This Is Why You're Fat to FoodBeast.com to BuzzFeed.com.
But enough with the Spam already. It's time to break another world record! For those of you who are unaware, Smoke In Da Eye Competition BBQ team was recently recognized by the fine folks at Universal Record Database (http://www.urdb.org) as having created the world's smallest Bacon Explosion(tm). A few weeks ago, the boys in the mustard jackets came calling again, asking if we would be interested in participating in the first annual URDB Food World Record Appreciation Night in New York City. Hells ya!
Since doing something on the grill would be extremely tough in a nightclub, we decided to create the World's Largest S'more, using a small blowtorch to toast the marshmallows on stage. Seemed simple enough. No practice, just jump on stage and make it happen. Then the event started. Layers of graham were laid out, topped with chocolate, then a marshmallow, creating a Ford style assembly line so marshmallows could be toasted en masse and the tower quickly assembled. Fire up the blowtorch and suddenly realize it's going to also melt the plastic table cloth, releasing horrible fumes and killing everyone (or at least making a big mess).
So it was time to improvise. Fortunately we had also brought a jar of marshmallow fluff in case we needed to fill in gaps, provide additional stickiness, etc. So between the marshmallows and the fluff, the tower began to rise. At about 10 inches, though, the heat from the stage lights started taking their toll on the structure and it began to lean...a lot. One last marshmallow and flame from the torch to top it off with style and our record was complete! Or at least until we decide to beat it...
Anyway, thanks again to the URDB folks for letting us play along and for providing the video below.
