Kingsford Cooks Up a $25k Championship Race
Hey all you competition BBQ teams, it's time to get #@*# paid!
Our friends at Kingsford® charcoal has teamed with the Kansas City Barbecue Society(KCBS) to develop the Kingsford® Points Chase – a cumulative point-based system to determine the best competition barbecue team on the Kansas City circuit. The system will tally scores from 17KCBS-sanctioned events during the core competition barbecue season –April through October – to determine the best team, which will receive$25,000 and be crowned the Kingsford® Points Chase Grand Champion.
To participate in the Kingsford® Points Chase, barbecue teams must first be enrolled in one of the 17 designated KCBS sanctioned events that are part of the Points Chase series – starting in Springfield, Mo., and culminating in Kansas City, Mo. Teams can register at www.KCBS.us from March 1through September 30, 2010, but they must pledge to use Kingsford® briquets as their main fuel source to be eligible to win. Top team shave been competing with Kingsford® charcoal for years, including 10-time World Barbecue Champion Chris Lilly and his Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q team, which has won all of its titles competing over the quality coals. In fact, Lilly was one of the initial organizers of one of the events on the Points Chase schedule – the Riverfest State Championship BBQ Cook-Off & Musical Extravaganza in his hometown of Decatur, Ala.
Points Chase judging will take place based on rules and processes already in place at each individual event. Participants and winners of each category (pork, chicken, ribs, and brisket) and overall categories will be awarded points ranging from as much as 80 points for the Grand Champion (first place winner, overall categories) at the biggest event of the year (American Royal in Kansas City, Mo.) to one point for participation. In addition to points, the Grand Champion of each event will be awarded $1,000 on top of the existing prize money attached to each contest. After each event, scores will be tallied and posted on the KCBS Website and the Kingsford Facebook page, along with information on winners, including hometown, favorite recipe, grilling tips and photos.
